Health and Family

By strengthening Florida’s families we promote a culture of healthy homes, healthy individuals and healthy communities. Florida is focusing on providing permanency for children in state care through adoption as well as, safety and security through the prevention of abuse, neglect and abandonment of those most vulnerable. The state’s network of services is designed to build stronger families and brighter futures for the children and families of Florida.

Our state is also working to maximize access to health care and rehabilitative services for as many Floridians as possible. Florida is promoting healthy lifestyles and working to lower teenage pregnancy and infant mortality while raising the number of Floridians who are immunized against preventable diseases.
  • Florida is a national leader in responding to allegations of elder and child abuse, neglect and exploitation.
  • The number of adoptions decreased slightly from the previous year and more children are awaiting adoption, but current numbers are twice as good as 10 years ago.
  • The number of children in foster care continues to decrease.
  • Florida is encouraged by a declining teen pregnancy rate, while concerned with a growing percentage of obese adults and children.
  • While the large majority of Floridians have access to health care and rehabilitative services, nearly three million Floridians are uninsured, including more than 500,000 children.
  • The number of Floridians with disabilities in need of state services is growing.
  • Immunization rates increased for seniors, but dropped slightly for infants.
Florida measures key indicators to enable the state to measure progress, identify areas of concern, and provide evidence of opportunities for local, state, and federal agencies to work together for the betterment of our families.
