Environment/Conservation
Florida's priorities include improving air quality, restoring and protecting the water quality in our springs, lakes, rivers and coastal waters as well ensuring quality drinking water. The state is also committed to conserving environmentally sensitive lands, providing citizens and visitors with recreational opportunities - both now and in the future - and restoring America's Everglades.
- Florida is a national leader in promoting the use of alternative fuels.
- Florida state government is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by hundreds of thousands of metric tons each year.
- Air quality is good nearly every day with limited exceptions.
- Florida's drinking water is safe while surface water bodies are being monitored, with some needing improvement.
- Florida is maintaining its effort to address critically eroded beaches and restoring many of them annually.
- Solid waste recycling efforts have declined, due in part to a leveling off or decline in citizen participation in local recycling programs.
- State efforts on Everglades restoration are progressing, but the project awaits strong federal participation as pledged.
Florida measures key indicators to enable the state to measure progress, identify areas of concern, and provide evidence of opportunities for local, state, and federal agencies to work together for the benefit of our citizens, resources and wildlife.
